DIAG 18 – CAPTURING DISTANT SCENERY BY USING A MANMADE OBJECT

The eye is attracted by the manmade object placed in the middle distance. This has been further reinforced by echoing it with another object in the garden.

3. An Object -

An object such as a Japanese lantern can be used to capture landscape by placing it in the middle distance, and drawing the eye from the garden into the landscape to be captured. The effect of the ‘capture can be reinforced by relating the object used to a similar object in the garden, for instance another lantern. This technique is used to good effect in the garden of Joju-in, which is part of the Kiyomizu-dera complex of temples in Kyoto.
